We just got back from a wonderful week visiting family in California. As we sat in the airport during our (delayed) final flight home, reminiscing about the week, I realized there were a few lessons I wanted to bring back to the kitchen—and to life.

Take advantage of the area
It’s always a bonus when you’re visiting someone familiar with the region, but even if you’re exploring solo, insider tips and local reviews are just a tap away. This trip was a perfect reminder to get out there and try something new.

I’ve always had great meals in California, but I never would’ve predicted that one of the best authentic German meals I’ve ever had would happen in El Dorado County. That unexpected delight reminded me to bring more German favorites into my own kitchen.

Explore new things
At the risk of sounding a little nerdy, I love hunting down local food magazines (shoutout to Edible and yes, I still lament the loss of my region’s edition). They’re a great way to discover regional favorites, spark inspiration for new dishes, or find that “Hey, remember when…” moment months later.

And sometimes, they offer just the right push to try something new. A new flavor pairing. A fresh take on a classic. A different way to serve something familiar. It’s those little nudges that make food fun again.

Feed your passion (no pun intended)
You know I’m a huge fan of small plates. So when I came across a cookbook dedicated to boards at one of the wineries we visited, my whole group burst out laughing. And yes, I made a promise to share a new board the next time we’re all together.

Whatever your food love is—small plates, baking, spice blends—find fresh ways to keep it alive. Experiment. Explore. Don’t let routine take the joy out of it.

All wine is not created equal
Oh friends, this one’s close to my heart. We adore our Finger Lakes wines and that won’t be changing anytime soon. But this trip reminded me that each wine region has its strengths.

  • California reds like Barbera and Zinfandel were truly next level.
  • New York whites especially Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer held their own beautifully.

And the wildcard? We love dry rosés on both coasts.

Lesson: appreciate what each region brings to the glass.

One night, we were served perfectly roasted potatoes: crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside. We asked the secret. The answer? Olive oil, salt, and pepper. Same story with the asparagus, harvested that morning and finished with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice after a quick grill. And the fresh strawberries we had every morning? Glorious.

This whole trip was a reminder to use what’s in season, lean into simplicity, and let the ingredients shine.

Where will your summer travels take you? Wherever you’re headed, whether it’s a quick road trip or a big family gathering, I hope you find joy in discovery, delicious bites, and meaningful moments.

May you enjoy it all in good health and with people you love.

Eat well, friends!
