Homemade Snack Mix (An Easy, Make-It-Your-Own Recipe)

This is officially on repeat in my kitchen this winter! It’s the kind of snack that makes the house smell buttery and toasty and requires you to grab a handful every time you walk by (well, maybe if you have better willpower you can resist…). Once you make it from scratch, you’re probably not going to want to go back to buying a bag. It makes a ton of toasty goodness, keeps for a week or two in a sealed container (it doesn’t make it that long in my house), and you can customize the spices the way you want.

Ingredients

Base Mix

  • 3 cups Corn Chex
  • 3 cups Wheat Chex
  • 1½–2 cups pretzels (mini twists or squares)
  • 1½ cups peanuts or mixed nuts
  • 1–2 cups extras (potato sticks, bagel chips, Cheez-Its, Oyster crackers)

Seasoning

  • 1 stick unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1½ teaspoons seasoned salt
  • ¾ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¾ teaspoon onion powder

Let’s Cook!

  • Preheat oven to 250°F
  • In the largest bowl you have, combine all the cereals, pretzels, nuts, and any extras (the bigger the bowl, the less you’ll have to clean off your counter as you add the seasonings – voice of experience here).
  • In a small bowl, whisk together melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  • Pour seasoning over the mix and toss until everything is evenly coated.
  • Spread mixture evenly over two rimmed baking sheets so everything is spread out evenly.
  • Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and let cool completely before storing (it crisps up as it cools).
  • Store in airtight containers and enjoy!

Make the Flavors Your Own!

  • Add 1–2 tablespoons of ranch seasoning to the butter before tossing
  • Add a teaspoon of wing sauce or hot sauce to the butter for a different flavor
  • A pinch of cayenne or smoked paprika can be added if you want to warm up the spices
  • Drizzle some hot honey over the baking sheets when they come out of the oven
  • Toss with grated parmesan when the trays come out of the oven
  • Sprinkle your favorite popcorn seasoning over the trays at the end

Baking your own is fun because it becomes a choose your own adventure of what kind of taste you’re feeling. Trust me friends, there’s no wrong answers here. Let me know what path you choose or if you stick with the traditional version!

Eat well friends!
