We all have that one recipe that transports us straight back to parties of old. You know the ones — where you tried to sneak into the adult conversations (and grab an appetizer or two while you were at it). This one has been passed between family and friends for years, and it always disappears in a flash. It’s the kind of party snack that never goes out of style.

Retro Party Rye Rounds

The throwback party appetizer that never fails. Cheesy, savory Party Rye Rounds come together fast and always disappear first. Bonus: you can make them ahead!
Course Appetizer, Snack
Servings 2 dozen

Ingredients

  • 24 slices of cocktail rye bread
  • 6 slices bacon
  • 1/4 c. finely chopped green onion
  • 3/4 c. mayo
  • 1/2 c. Swiss cheese shredded
  • Tomato slices optional

Let’s Cook!

  • Toast bread slices for five minutes in a 350 degree oven.
  • Remove from oven, flip slices over.
  • Fry bacon until it’s cooked to your desired crispiness
  • Crumble the bacon, mix with onion, mayo, Swiss, pepper.
  • Place a slice of tomato on bread if used.
  • Spread bacon mix on bread.
  • Put under broiler until bubbling. (5-7 minutes)

Notes

  • Keep an eye on them while broiling so they don’t get too browned.
  • Let them cool for a few minutes before serving — trust me, burning the roof of your mouth does not make for a festive party favor.
  • These can be assembled several hours in advance. Just place them on a cookie sheet and refrigerate until ready to broil and serve.
